BAM
B. A. M.
Bold. Action. Mark.
Be _____. Take _____. Leave a _____.
These seven magic words have power.
Power to Change.
Power to Shape.
Power to Transform.
Power to Simplify.
Power to Clarify.
Power to Direct.
Power to guide, support and empower.
Let’s look at each idea a little deeper.
>>> Be Bold.
Be. Not think. Not say. Not claim. But . . . Be.
“Be the change you want to see.” (Gandhi)
“Be humble. Be hungry. And always be the hardest worker in the room.” (The “Rock”)
“Always Be Yourself, unless you can Be Batman, then Always Be Batman.” (Unknown, but sounds like someone you know, right?)
This is very “now” focused. Present, and embodied. Not in your head, but in experience. It’s a posture. A shape you take. Be this thing.
[If you need an anchor word from the quotes above, choose hungry. We all know what it’s like to experience hunger, and yet remembering hunger or thinking about hunger pales in comparison to actually being hungry].
So, “Be.” Be Bold. Bold. (<–See the difference).
One blends in, and the other stands out. Won’t be ignored. Shows courage (even though fear still whispers).
Brave. Confident. Gutsy and Gallant. Dauntless.
Are you being bold, or are you hiding? Have you been seduced by someday, or numbed by comfort?
Who comes to mind when you think about being bold? How could you show up more like them in your family, or business? How might that impact what actions you take?
[You’ll notice that boldness, which is an attitude, comes with a cluster of embedded emotions. (Emotions: energy for motion).
When you’re bold you’re leaning in, front facing. And ready for action. It’s a pre-launch phase. The emotions are propulsion engines. And they do two things: get you moving (or keep you stuck), and track whether you are on the path and progressing or off the path.
Negative emotions are just as valuable as they signal the need for course corrective action].
>>> Take Action.
Take: Grip. Grab. Grasp. Remove. Subtract. Carry Away.
What’s your take? (What idea grabbed you?)
Take a look, take a risk, take your turn. A choice. Something specific. “This” not “that”. Possession.
Action: Move. Engage. Progress. Resist. Grapple.
Actions speak louder than . . .
All talk and no . . .
Grip and Grapple not just with ideas, but with activities, with movement, in a specific direction.
Get out of your head and into your body. Move with intent.
What’s the most important action you can take, or the simplest/easiest next step? What actions are you currently taking, and are they in-line with your intention? Or are they helping you hide, like a “noble” obstacle.
[Meaning they serve as a “smoke screen.” These actions are hard to argue with because you’re “doing good,” but they keep you from making your true mark.]
>>> Leave a Mark.
Make your mark. On your mark. Leave your mark.
From this we get a sense of being present. Moving from the obscurity of the masses to a position of being counted, seen and heard. Sign the ledger.
[Most of us forget the benefits of literacy. Even as late as WWI, being literate meant you could sign your name, and not just make your mark. Your mark was an “X”. When we sign documents today they have an “X” that denotes where we are to sign our mark].
Do it in a way that leaves something behind for others to see, and follow. The ancients marked sacred spaces with stones. Hunters and animals mark trails. Where you stand makes an impression, and leaves a mark.
Wounds leave scars.
Success leaves clues.
Excellence echoes, and reverberates.
What mark will you make? What Impact? What Impression will you leave behind?
