It’s 3:11 AM in Brisbane, as I type this. I flew over here to speak at one of the biggest conferences in Australia.
The conference was one of the best I’ve been to, and the white sandy beaches of the Gold Coast don’t hurt either.
When you make a looooong trip like this, you have to leverage it for maximum advantage. So I’ve been catching up with friends and having business meetings every day.
This gets me to the question everyone needs to answer, but few have an answer for.
I was catching up with a good friend and super-sharp business mind, John Logar, yesterday. We were discussing the difficulties people have achieving their goals. And I asked him, “What do you see as the biggest roadblock for people?”
He replied. “They have sideways vision and no forward vision. They’re looking at what everyone else is doing, and they don’t move forward.”
I loved the, ‘sideways vision-forward vision’ comment because it aligns with my experience.
Most people don’t articulate what they want.
Read this next part slowly, because it’s critical.
I DID NOT say, people don’t KNOW what they want. Because in my experience, people DO know what they want, they just don’t admit it to themselves.
People are scared to admit what they want. Why?
Because the moment someone admits it, there’s no excuse anymore. You can’t hide behind: “I need more clarity… I need some help…, or I need to figure it out.”
In my programs, mentoring, and coaching, I’m relentless in asking people, ‘What do you want?’
When you’re constantly looking sideways, it’s extremely difficult to see what you want.
The discipline of constantly asking yourself, “What do I want? What do I want? What do I want?” over and over and over again, is one of THE most critical skills you can ever build.
And you can build on that question with more specific questions, like:
- What do I want this week?
- What do I want in my mornings?
- What do I want next month?
- What do I want to experience in my marriage?
- What do I want to see in my lifetime?
- What do I want to think about regarding my relationships?
- What do I want to see in my bank accounts?
- What do I want to feel when I’m by myself?
If the only skill you built in 2024 was the ability to clearly and confidently articulate ‘what you want’—you will have unlocked a level of life few experience, but is available to everyone.
Be Bold. Take Action. Leave a Mark.
